Ayala vs Pangilian: who's the better employer?

When President Rodrigo Duterte addressed the country on March 16 regarding the coronavirus health crisis, he appealed to owners of big companies to consider extending assistance to their employees who are gravely affected by the heightening lockdown.

Among the special mentions were the Ayalas and Manny Pangilinan, who are often referred as "oligarchs" by the President in previous speeches. The two camps immediately let the public know what they are offering their employees in response to the president's call.

In a signed statement by Ayala Corp. chairman and CEO Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala, and president and COO Fernando Zobel de Ayala, it states that the Ayala Group has created an “emergency response package” for its about 65,000 employees from Ayala Malls, Makati Development Corp, Globe Telecom, and  Ayala companies.

The packages consists of wages, bonuses, leave conversions and loan deferments primarily for its employees during the quarantine period.

Figures have it that the relief package amounts to P2.4B.

The Ayala brothers said in the statement:

“In these most trying times, those significantly affected by the COVID-19 situation are the thousands of workers that will be affected by the enhanced community quarantine because their places of work have been closed.”
