Why fireflies in Masungi Georeserve matter

Recently, everyone went crazy over photos of firefly light trails over the Masungi Georeserve in Baras, Rizal. For urban dwellers, it seemed like a Disney event.

What exactly does the presence of fireflies in the area mean? Fireflies simply do not live in places that are polluted. Thus, the fireflies just gave a thumbs up to the area for being not polluted.

For over 15 years, the Masungi Georeserve, which is part of Sierra Madre, has been under conservation efforts to save it from human-made destruction. The fireflies are a proof that the efforts are paying off.

In Puerto Princesa, tourists can also go out at night on a boat for firefly sightseeing activities as part of tourist packages. Masungi Georeserve also offers nature bathing activities, but no firefly sightseeing yet.
